U.S. Defense Strategy Under Scrutiny as Taiwan Arms Policy Faces Uncertainty
According to reports, the United States has put on hold the sales worth $14 billion of weapons to Taiwan to focus on arms provision for “Epic Fury,” which is the joint military exercise of Israel and the US targeting Iran. Acting Secretary of the Navy, Hung Cao, has said so in testimony before the Senate. It should be noted that these weapons sales will be restarted when the administration finds them necessary. According to the statements made by Trump, a change in the previous foreign policy towards Taiwan has been made. Namely, he treats the weapons sale to Taiwan as a “negotiating tool” after consultations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
